Reports are coming in from HTC One Google Play Edition owners that they’ve begun receiving a 320 megabyte over the air update to Android 4.4 KitKat. While there are no screenshots to confirm this, the source is Android Central, and the guys even have a link to Google’s servers where the update is being hosted.
Own a One, but don’t own a Google Play Edition One? Don’t worry, there will probably be a custom ROM on the internet within 24 hours waiting for you to download, but I suggest you remain patient, because HTC has already said that they plan on pushing out KitKat to the Sense-packed One in late January. What exactly is so special about KitKat? Nothing, really. All the interesting parts in KitKat are actually specific to the Nexus 5, which uses a new home screen launcher that passively listens to you and waits for commands. I know that kind of sounds like the Moto X, but the Moto X actually listens to you even when the screen is off, whereas the Nexus 5 requires you have the screen on and your home screen is in the foreground. When will the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition get its respective update? If I had to make a guess, I’d say a week. Two weeks maximum. It’s already been confirmed that Samsung’s code has been given to Google, now it’s just Google’s responsibility to package it up and push out the update.
