Despite HTC managing to build enough hype before the launch of the One M8 in March, and being quite confident of this new flagship, the company’s sales this past month don’t seem to have been positively affected. According to figures released by the company, its revenues dropped by 4.59% in May compared to the previous month with a year-over-year decline of 27.37%. The company made a meagre NT$21.065 billion or $701.4 million last month, indicating that even the One M8 hasn’t helped the company get out of jail. Part of the reason for HTC’s dismal performance can be attributed to its poor marketing regime which isn’t as inventive as what we’ve seen from Samsung, LG or even Apple for that matter. It is understandable that the company doesn’t have the marketing finances of these big corporations, but what we’ve seen from HTC so far has been pretty average and limited to say the least. The One M8 ad which recently made the rounds featured British legend Gary Oldman saying nothing more than “blah blah blah” and “ask the internet” in the commercial. Unless HTC tells its customers about the features of its flagship smartphone, they can’t expect to be trust with their money. So this is an area where the Taiwanese manufacturer has some learning to do from major mobile OEMs. Samsung shipped 10 million units of the Galaxy S5 within 25 days of its launch, while the LG G3 is already on its way to becoming another best seller. So keeping the competition in mind, we think it’s going to be exceedingly difficult for HTC to get out of this hole that keeps getting bigger and bigger.
