Huawei is Now Saying HongMeng OS is Not an Android Alternative

If you have been staying updated with the latest tech news, then you might know about the recent US trade ban on Huawei. Since the U.S. has lifted the ban, all US tech companies were now allowed to do business with China’s Huawei. However, during the ban, Huawei has announced that they are working on a new operating system named Hongmeng OS that will power its future smartphones. Now the company has announced that its supposed Android operating system replacement HongMeng OS is in fact not an Android replacement. What’s more confusing is that recently the CEO of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei even claimed that the Hongmeng OS is 60% faster than Android and macOS. Now, the main question is that, if it’s not an Android replacement, why compare it with Android or macOS? A few days ago, the company also published a trademark for a new mobile operating system named ‘Harmony’. The filings refer ‘Harmony’ as a mobile operating system, and it didn’t share any other information about it. Recently, Huawei’s executive Liang Hua said “The Hongmeng OS is primarily developed for IoT devices that will reduce latency… In terms of smartphones, we are still using the Android operating system and ecosystem as a “first choice.” “We haven’t decided yet if the Hongmeng OS can be developed as a smartphone operating system in the future.” Just like you, we are also baffled about what Huawei is doing. But it looks like since the ban on Huawei was lifted, the company is finding no point in developing an Android alternative. The Android operating system on Huawei devices is working well for a long time now, and the company might have plans to continue with Android on the future also. What’s your take on this?
