The company understands that the transfer of data to the devices is very risky and announced the decision by means of an internal communication. According to Shamla Naidoo, IBM’s chief security officer, the ban should minimize possible financial and reputational damage because of the loss or misuse of those devices. The rule is already valid for some departments of the company and should be deployed around the world by the next week. Employees will have to use File Sync and Share, an IBM cloud storage service that is also offered to other companies. In the document, Naidoo admitted that the move may be “disruptive to some.” The difference should be more felt by those who work performing repairs and upgrades for IBM customers. Instead of using pen drives, these employees will need to access the enterprise cloud directly in those locations. IBM’s decision may seem a bit radical, but it should cause the company to minimize the risk of data leakage.
