Most Android users assume that if they have downloaded an app from the Google Play Store it should be safe to use. What do people say about assuming? Android users are learning the hard way that not every app on the Google Play Store has been properly vetted or that those bad apps managed to stealthily bypass Google security. This isn’t a new problem for Google, but this latest app lapse has affected millions of Android users and wreaked havoc on their phones. These apps make Android phones ‘unusable’
Researchers have found that 238 apps downloaded 440 million times from the Google Play Store carried adware that was so aggressive it “renders a mobile device nearly unusable,” according to a report from the mobile security provider Lookout. The culprit apps that got past Google Play Store vetting contained BeiTaAd, which Lookout described as a “well-obfuscated advertising plugin.” “The plugin forcibly displays ads on the user’s lock screen, triggers video and audio advertisements even while the phone is asleep, and displays out-of-app ads that interfere with a user’s interaction with other applications on their device,” the report stated. In many cases, people were not even able to answer calls because ads would pop up and block the phone screen. The apps in question are very popular and include TouchPal Keyboard Pro with 5 million installs, Abs Workout with 10 million installs and Color Screen with 50 million installs. All 238 apps were published by Shanghai-based CooTek. The company told Newsweek that it discovered the problem months ago and disabled the plugin and has now removed it entirely from the apps. How to protect your device from dangerous apps
Hearing about apps that make your phone unusable is scary. Luckily, this particular problem has an easy fix. You can completely delete the app or update it. Now, why would you want to update an app that has caused so many problems? Maybe you don’t, but by updating the app you will get the version without the malicious adware plugin. This latest Google Play Store incident is just one in a series of bad apps that have come through the store, so be careful when downloading an app. Here are a few ways to help stay protected: Pay attention to reviews Most popular apps will have reviews from other users in the app store. You can sometimes find reviews by experts online. These are helpful at pointing out malicious or faulty apps. If you find a review warning the app is malicious, do NOT download it. Check the app’s developer Verifying the name of the app developer is important. Copycat apps will have a different developer’s name than the actual one. Before downloading an app, do a Google search to find the original developer. Avoid third-party apps Only download apps from the Google Play Store. Even though some malicious apps make it into the Play Store, like this latest incident, it does have a more thorough screening process. This cuts down on the chances a malicious app makes it in.
