If you’ve got $1200 burning in your pocket and instead of feeding the homeless you’d rather buy a frivolous piece of consumer electronics, then Lenovo has just announced the prefect product for you. Known as the ThinkVision, it’s a 28 inch 4K monitor (3840 x 2160) that’s powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 4. It has 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, three HDMI ports, an ethernet port, and it can detect 10 fingers using the touch screen. Wait, why is there ethernet? Because there’s no WiFi.
Now unlike the $400 21 inch HP Slate Pro that I wrote about earlier today, which I actually recommended for schools, hotels, and old people, this $1200 tech demo is just impossible to love. You can buy three of those 21 inch HP computers, connect them to a library’s WiFi network, and change few children’s lives. The ThinkVision on the other hand … I don’t get it. Who is it for? If you’re going to spend this much money on a high end tablet, you might as well get Microsoft’s Surface Pro. It runs far more applications thanks to the Intel chip inside. It has a stylus, which is useful if you’re an artist. It has WiFi, so you don’t need to string wires across your floor. And you can actually take it with you places. Try shoving a 28 inch monitor in a carry-on bag. Not going to happen. Can you figure out why this product exists? Please let me know.
