Previous LG G5 leaks have claimed that the handset will come with a “Magic Slot” that will make it possible to attach new kind of accessories to the device like a VR headset or an external keyboard. Now, as per a source of CNET Korea, the G5 will feature a modular design. With a metal unibody build, it becomes tough for companies to offer features like a removable battery. LG has developed a workaround to this problem which involves detaching the bottom of the phone to allow the battery to easily slid out from the phone. HTC had previously employed a similar design in its Legend smartphone, and while the idea is definitely unique, a modular part in a smartphone if not done properly can lead to reliability issues in the long run. LG has apparently tested multiple designs for the G5 since September 2015, and has only recently finalised on one that features a sliding drawer at the bottom to reveal the battery. The report also claims that LG will be ditching its trademark rear placed volume and power buttons on the G5, and place them again on the left and right edges of the handset. Previous leak regarding the G5 have indicated that the phone will come with a 5.3-inch Quad HD display, 3GB RAM, a Snapdragon 820 chipset, and a 16MP rear shooter with a dual-camera setup. Irrespective of whether the ‘modular design’ on the G5 turns out to be a hit or a miss, it is nice to see LG trying out something new and innovative in its flagship handset unlike other smartphone OEMs out there. LG is expected to unveil the G5 at its press conference in MWC on February 21.
