Yesterday, this website, along with the rest of the internet, wrote an article saying that LG was going to put more of an emphasis on their television division while simultaneously putting less of a focus on the mobile phone group. The source of that news was the Korean publication ET News, which I tend to trust, hence why I personally decided to run the story instead of ignore it.
Today, LG reached out to PhoneArena and issued the following statement: To further reinforce LG’s statement, I’d like to share another rumor, from another Korean publication, about LG’s future ambitions in the mobile chip space. LG currently uses chips from Qualcomm in their flagship phones. According to DT, LG plans on using their very own “Odin” chips for their highest end devices. Said chips will have four ARM Cortex A15 cores, four ARM Cortex A7 cores, and an as yet to be determined ARM Mali GPU. Unlike Samsung, however, LG will get TSMC to fabricate the chips because LG doesn’t have any chip manufacturing facilities. When can you expect to hear more about LG’s latest and greatest widgets? That’s hard to say. LG doesn’t seem to follow any sort of schedule, they just announce phones whenever they feel like it. But something tells me the first LG phone with an LG chip will be a second half of 2014 affair.
